Bruce Towne, head custodian at East Grand Rapids High School, gets a hug from Lillie Creswell, 16, on right, and Abigail Baumgartner, 16, after receiving a surprise award from the Greenville Outstanding Alumnus Committee at the end of the assembly on Monday, Feb. 4. Towne was honored for carrying on the spirit of Jimmy Gerken, a former custodian at East Grand Rapids who died in 2002. Assistant Principle Craig Weigel said Towne carried on the spirit of “Kabookie,” because he’s tremendously enthusiastic about his job and well-liked by many students.
